Hantavirus Information & Resources

With an increase in Hantavirus cases this year, we want to provide you with essential information and precautions to help prevent infection.

Eliminating food sources, water, and items that provide shelter for rodents is the best way to avoid rodent infestations and contact with them. Additionally, keep your work areas clean and free of clutter, unnecessary papers, leftover food, and trash. This applies to areas such as drawers, filing or storage cabinets, lounge areas, lockers, closets, lobbies, and other general spaces.

Tips to Eliminate Possible Rodent Food Sources in Work and Home Areas

  • Store food in thick plastic, glass, or metal containers with tight lids.
  • Avoid leaving open food or snacks in lockers or work areas.
  • Clean up spilled food immediately and wash dishes and utensils promptly after use.
  • Always store pet food properly after use, and avoid leaving pet food or water bowls out overnight.
  • Keep animal feed in rodent-proof thick plastic or metal containers with tight lids.
  • If storing trash or food waste indoors, use rodent-proof containers.

Steps to Eliminate Possible Nesting Sites

  • Elevate hay, woodpiles, and garbage cans at least one foot off the ground.
  • Move woodpiles far from the house (100 feet or more is ideal).
  • Dispose of old trucks, cars, and tires that could serve as rodent habitats.
  • Keep grass cut short and trim shrubs within 100 feet of your home.
  • Seal any openings in your home to prevent rodents from entering your living spaces.
